This is a GREAT chef knife that proves that when the American makers put their minds to it they could produce knives finer than anything from Europe. As you can see by its blade markings it was made in New Britain, Connecticut by Landers Frary & Clark, probably sometime in the 1920's-30's.

This provenance is of secondary importance, though, to its quality of design, materials, craftsmanship, condition and especially performance, all of which is truly outstanding. This knife remains in superb shape, as the pictures clearly show and in one key way it's in better-than-new shape because for this sale we've had its carbon steel blade professionally edged and it is now RAZOR keen in a way that will thrill even the most jaded chef.

It's very finely tapered carbon steel blade was hand-forged with an integral blade/bolster/tang construction and was triple-brass hafted with the finest old-growth rosewood. Just look at it--more finely crafted than 95% of most vintage Sabatier knives from France, and a work of the cutler's art. It's beautifully balanced in the hand and will speed through any kitchen's most demanding or most delicate chopping tasks. It's also substantial enough to handle any job, from turning a large bag of onions into a fine dice to shaving wafer-thin slices of turkey breast for a midnight snack. If you've never before used a carbon steel knife, you're in for a most pleasant surprise.

Only carbon steel takes a RAZOR edge easily and does not shatter like their stainless steel relatives especially Henckels! I've lost 3 this way. And outperforms stainless steel in almost every way.

You must wipe it down after each use but its beauty and superior performance are worth it. Measures 17.75" long with a 12.25" blade but by any measure a great knife at an even better price that any user or collector alike will rightly come to treasure as an heirloom.
