PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise.

Please read our Terms below for details. This superb vintage scimitar-style butcher carving knife is even better looking in person than the digital photos make it look. Its hand-forged carbon steel blade and its beautifully weathered cocobolo rosewood handle are as useful and comfortable as they are beautiful to look at.

Its stampings read, GOODELL COMPANY'S, ROYAL SLICER, PAT. 6, 1868, leaving no doubt about who made it. This style was made virtually unchanged well into the late 1800's so dating it precisely would be close to impossible. Its star- and acorn-shaped inlays at the bolster should tell you from a mile away that this is a Goodell piece, and one of the most famous the company ever made. Condition is excellent; as you can see, it has been used but has no damage at all and in one key way is better than when new: it has been sharpened to a RAZOR's edge so keen that one could literally shave a man's face with it. As such, it's one of the most INCREDIBLY handy knives for use that any chef will ever possess.

It has a broadly clipped point and a nicely flexible blade--ideal for a carving knife. In any kitchen it will waferize anything unfortunate enough to cross the road, from your Thanksgiving turkey to an onion, cutting paper thin some charcuterie or just for making a sandwich. If you're unfamiliar with its maker, Antrim, New Hampshire-based Goodell was one of the legion of small family-owned cutlery companies of New England, the majority of whom either stopped making quality knives or simply went bust during the great depression of the 1930's though Goodell managed to stay afloat decades beyond that. Like all carbon steel knives, it must be kept dry, even during use, but this minor inconvenience is more than offset by the superb edge maintenance and performance offered by carbon steel, as any experienced chef or butcher over the age of 50 can confirm.

If you plan on using this knife in your kitchen, I suspect you'll be very happy with its performance. If you're simply collecting, you're in luck--this is an excellent opportunity to add to your collection an heirloom quality piece in heirloom quality condition.
