This is a very fine knife and whether you're collecting antique cutlery items or merely in search of one of the finest butcher knives you could ever hope to use, it has just about everything to offer one could imagine--and more. It came to us from a large collection of cutlery from an estate in Italy and a finer piece of this size and shape would be impossible to name.
Made as a larger, much more heavy-duty butcher knife than most, yet not quite as heavy as a lamb-splitter, it's what most would agree is a breaking knife, the ideal blade for breaking down a much larger side or carcass, usually beef and pork. It measures 18.25" long with a 12.75" blade and weighs in at a very impressive 22.6 ounces. So stiff and heavy-duty is it that anyone would rightly be well served to also use such a knife as a larger knife for a hunting camp or even as a fighting piece.
Condition is very good in every detail, as you can see in the photos. This knife stands here for you as we obtained it, not only in superb condition but also honed to a wickedly sharp, razor's edge. To say the least, it's a very formidable blade that will outperform anything on the modern market. Caution, please, or a careless user may find himself in the E. Blade is hand-forged carbon steel of the finest quality.
Handles appear to be oak, hafted using three hand-wrought iron pins. The grip enjoys a bit of a birdshead profile, so swinging it like a cleaver will divide just about anything in half for good--WHAM! As with any carbon steel blade it must be kept dry to prevent rusting but this minor inconvenience is more than offset by the superior performance delivered by carbon steel, as any veteran user can readily confirm.
