Made in a style that has been known alternately as a buffalo skinner and a lamb-splitter, but no matter what you may call it it's the knife you want to reach for when you only want to reach once. Fishmongers, too, have always been users of these knives and it's no coincidence that it looks like a swimming shark. It's a style and size, though, that was widely carried by buffalo hunters in the years immediately following the Civil War, and though it's an early-mid 20th Century piece, it is of that 19th Century lineage. It's also remarkable for its condition, which is excellent, and in one key way it's BETTER than new, having been professionally edged for this sale in Texas by Slade Ingram, one of the best in the business. As such it's FAR sharper than when it was brand new and guaranteed to THRILL. It is even more beautiful than the digital photos make it look, even though it looks pretty good already! Its large curved carbon steel blade was hand-forged with a tapered tang, hafted with beautifully grained bois d'arc handle scales, also known as osage orange, fastened over its full and fatted tang using the old-fashioned, steel-inside-copper birdseye rivets. These handles are as warm to the touch as they are pleasing to the eye, giving the entire knife a whole new dimension of beauty; just look at it--a work of the cutler's art. Though it has some considerable collector value, it would be a shame not to use it, if you're able. Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and it can still do more than its share of butchering game or livestock. Hunters LOVE these for use in jointing game in the field for ease of carry-out. Comes with 12" blade (17-7/8" overall length) that is 3-3/8 wide at its widest, and weighs in at a very impressive 31.5 ounces--just shy of two POUNDS.
