Mann in Spokane, Washington sometime in the early 1900's and offered here in remarkably well-preserved condition. Mann was a very small-scale regional maker who wasn't in business for very long and in my many, many years of collecting cutlery I've only come across a very small handful of their knives and cleavers. That's a pity, too, because their work exudes quality in spades and in terms of its size, desigh, materials, craftsmanship, condition and especially performance, this fine cleaver wants for nothing.

It's blade is entirely hand-forged from very fine carbon steel with a full and tapered tang, hafted with brass rivets and some outstanding rosewood handle scales that are as warm to the touch as they are easy on the eyes. As with all carbon steel blades it must be kept dry to prevent rusting but this minor inconvenience is more than offset by the superior performance delivered by carbon steel, as any veteran user can readily confirm. For the purpose of this sale we've had its edge professionally honed up by the good people at Ross Cutlery in downtown Los Angeles, one of the best in the business and it's now WICKEDLY sharp in a way that very few knives ever can be. This is an extremely useful butcher knife and hefty, weighing in at 12.1 ounces. It measures 18.75" long with a blade that's 13.25" long by 2 wide.
