This is a very large and heavy antique meat cleaver. It is 30-1/2 in length and weighs nearly 8 lbs. The logo stamped on the blade reads L. The blade itself is 12-1/8 in length and is 6-3/16 wide at the end and tapers to 4-3/4 at the handle. The top edge of the blade is a stout 3/8 thick.

The wooden handle is about 17 in length, 1-1/2 wide, and 1 thick. The blades tang runs the full length of the handle and is about 3/8 thick at the blade and 3/16 thick at the handles knobbed end.

The tang is sandwiched between two pieces of hardwood possibly hickory or ash? That are fastened with 3 rivets. All of the handles wooden corner edges are trimmed at an angle and cut / knurled with a row of light scorings to provide a better grip this tool is meant to be used with both hands! The blade and handle are slightly offset by a few degreesi. There is a slight bend at the point where the blade ends and the handle begins. Or perhaps it is the result of misuse as a prybar that is hard to imagine given its awkward shape not to mention its strength but still, that is a possibility. The blade is rusted and pitted.

However, it does not have any serious gouges or nicks. The cutting edge is true and intact and shows no sign of abuse. There is plenty of steel left if someone wanted to restore this cleaver.

That would certainly be an option. A good deal of grinding and sanding would result in a bright, clean blade. It is in overall good condition although there is a slight separation from the tang in an area (see photo). The wood has the expected number of small nicks and scratches.

This cleaver hung in my Dads garage for decades and in mine for several. Although he was born on a farm in Northern Ohio in 1919, I do not believe this is from the family farm.
