Condition is outstanding and in one very key way it's BETTER than when it was new, having been professionally edged for this sale by the good folks at Ross Cutlery in downtown Los Angeles, one of the best in the business. As such, it's FAR sharper than most knives ever can be and FAR sharper than when it first left the factory. Caution, please, or a careless user may find himself in the E. Weighing in at 25.4 ounces it comes with a very heavy duty blade that's capable of dispatching just about anything your kitchen can throw at it.

With its sturdy 8" x 3.75" carbon steel blade (it's 14 overall) and full tang it is as useful as it is beautiful. It's ready to serve a useful lifetime at work in your kitchen, and whether you're using it to butcher game or livestock, or for all-purpose cooking, it's one of the most effective cleavers you'll ever use. It's very difficult to find knives of this vintage, though you'll certainly want to, since the handle is beechwood rather than plastic and the blade was hand-forged from crucible cast steel (as was the norm prior to 1987) rather than from recycled steel stock, as is the practice today.

The difference is real-I've had several contemporary knives SNAP in mid-use, but I've NEVER had a vintage one do it, and as a serious collector of vintage kitchen knives, I use the vintage ones in my own kitchen FAR more often. A very slight amount of contaminant in recycled steel can be made quite evident under the stress of even normal usage.
