PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. Please read our Terms below for details. Marked only with an "A" stamped into one side of its handle, this wonderful old knife may look merely BIG at first glance, but up close and personal it is truly scary. Known alternately as a buffalo skinner and a lamb-splitter, it's the knife you want to reach for when you only want to reach once.

I assure you, whatever it is that you may need to divide in half with it, will be permanently divided in half on the first try. FIshmongers also used these extensively, and it is no coincidence that this knife has a somewhat shark-shaped profile. The hole in the blade was useful for hanging on a nail or hook, but the sellers of these were not unaware of the figural fish appearance it gave the piece. It's a style and size, though, that was widely carried by buffalo hunters in the years immediately following the Civil War. I doubt that it dates back quite that far, but it's certainly of that lineage, and, as evidenced by its oak handles and overall patina, it was made LONG ago.

Condition is excellent and in one very key way BETTER than when it was new, having been professionally edged for this sale by the good people at Ross Cutlery in downtown Los Angeles, the best in the business--guaranteed to THRILL. Its large curved carbon steel blade was hand-forged with a full tang, brass-riveted over solid oak handles.

Its makers marks are no longer evident, which is a shame, since the makers of this piece, and their descendants, have every right to be very proud of it. Almost certainly, though, it's an American piece, since I've never yet seen one quite like this that wasn't American. The entire piece is beautifully weathered and it just begs to be held.

Though it has some considerable collector value, it would be a shame not to use it, if you're able. Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and I have little doubt it could still do more than its share of butchering of game or livestock. Its oak handles are as warm and comfortable in the hand as they are easy on the eye. Comes with 12" blade (17-7/8" overall length) that is 2.5" wide at its widest, and runs almost 3/16" thick along most of its length. Weighs in at a very impressive 28.9 ounces.

Handle has no cracks, chips, looseness or damage to wood at all--just superb in every way. If you're simply collecting such items, you're in luck--this is a rare opportunity to add some authenticity and quality--not to mention SIZE--to your collection. And don't listen to the anybody: SIZE.
