Whether you're a collector, hunter or someone interested in living re-enactment of history, THIS is a great knife that offers just about everything one could hope to find in terms of rarity, beauty, materials, craftsmanship, condition and performance. The knife was hand-forged by Foster Bros.

In upstate New York, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. To say the least it's a rare and unusual find--a premium-quality piece in every respect from the maker who is widely regarded as having made the best culinary knives the USA has ever produced; and this is certainly one of them--Exhibit A, if you will. Though it has been used and sharpened, it's still in excellent, ready-to-go-to-work condition--RAZOR sharp and ready to work or just to enhance the beauty of any collection.

Its curved skinning blade is ideally suited to making the difficult strokes necessary for removing hides and pelts of fallen game or livestock. In terms of its performance, it's as good as any such knife has a right to be--nicely balanced in the hand, with a 4-7/8" carbon steel blade (9" overall length). The blade was hand-forged from the finest American carbon cutlery steel with a tapered tang and its blade is hafted onto gorgeously mellowed old-growth beechwood handles that are fixed to a full and tapered tang with 3 iron pins. If you've been looking for just the right vintage skinning knife, one that has mellowed only in appearance, but still carries a big-time BITE, look no further.

Is blade is 100% carbon steel, which takes a RAZOR edge and keeps it with relatively easy honing. If you've never before used carbon steel knives, you're in for a true revelation: carbon steel knives attain RAZOR sharpness with great ease and can be rehoned without the assistance of a blacksmith, unlike overly hardened modern stainless knives. You must wipe the blade dry with each use, but this minor inconvenience is much more than offset by superior performance.

True professional chefs and butchers have always preferred carbon steel knives, and once you've incorporated one into your arsenal, you'll soon want more. And NOTHING will make faster work of game or livestock, if you're butchering your own. The curved shape of the blade allows for perfect and sure cutting on a single stroke--every time--and has numerous uses in any gourmet kitchen, amateur or professional.

An outstanding piece in every respect for use or display and a true find, especially in this size and condition.
