Please read our Terms below for details. Of course, you expect any Herder knife to be among the world's finest, but this is in a class by itself. Unlike most, which were made with black composite handles or sometimes with rosewood, this one was crafted with gorgeous old-growth African ebony of the highest quality, warm to the touch and just beautiful to behold.
It was made in Germany by Richard Herder, and is stamped with that name and and the company's star logo. They don't make ANYTHING this fine today; no one does.It was made FAR prior to 1987 (I'm guessing that it's from the early 1900's) from superior virgin steel, unlike the recycled stock used to make even the finest German cutlery today. Its fine carbon steel blade takes an edge FAR better than the overly hardened stainless that's on the market today and will never snap on you in normal use. Condition is solid and tight with no cracks, chips or looseness on its handles. Best of all, perhaps, this exceptional knife was recently given an EXTREMELY sharp professional edge and must be treated with extreme care. You can literally shave your face with it.
In the old days, many classically trained French chefs didn't consider a knife fit for professional use until it received its first "working" edge upon receipt from the factory. Sushi chefs continue this tradition with their rituals of water stones and the resulting keen of their blades is virtually alien to most home cooks (and to many professional chefs) of Western indoctrination. This knife comes pretty close to just that kind of sharpness, but please exercise MAXIMUM caution, since a careless user may find himself in the E. It comes in a nice handy size with a clipped 5.25" blade (measures 9-3/8" long overall), beautifully forged with full and integral tang/bolster/blade--a masterpiece. It's a world-class piece of cutlery and an excellent opportunity to upgrade your cutlery collection from merely excellent to extraordinary.
